'Dr. Deb' has been in healthcare since 1989, promoting healthy living through education and awareness. She first received a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science in Canada followed by TCM Acupuncture Certification. She owned and operated a community wellness clinic in rural and urban Manitoba collaborating with other practitioners, First Nation communities, the Canadian Armed Forces and Manitoba Regional Health Authority. After several years of practice, she moved to Guadalajara, Mexico to commence her medical training and then transitioned to New York to complete her studies as a board-certified Physician Associate. During her thesis year, she facilitated research in Guatemala focusing on simulation training with comadronas (traditional midwives) in preventing postpartum hemorrhage. She gained valuable experience in orthopedics and sports medicine while working at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan and went on to work in pain management, physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as ER and urgent care. Dr. Thorne continued her professional advancement through the University of Lynchburg in Virginia, facilitating a fellowship and Doctor of Medical Science degree. In 2019 she created and developed Medicina del Sol, LLC as a unique approach to accessible and affordable healthcare without the need for health insurance. The practice has grown over the years and in 2023 when her partner Dr. Lerma, MD joined the practice, MDS became more of a 'hybrid' clinic.
Dr. Thorne continues to pursue higher academia and spent additional years of acupuncture training focusing on Integrated Structural Acupuncture combining Chinese and Japanese methods of healing. In 2021, she began utilizing ketamine-assisted therapy for depression, anxiety and substance use disorder, and became deeply committed to working in the area of mental health. Her training of three years in integrative medicine, mental health and psychedelic medicine is extensive and she has busy ketamine-assisted psychotherapy practice in Las Cruces, NM.
